 E: Yes. Your mind goes around and around, and where’s the space? It’s going to get a little complicated here now. As I speak, the moment I say, “Let’s lose some weight and eat some ice cream and cake,” your mind is already in gear, isn’t it? So there’s no space between what I said and what you think. All you did was make my statement part of your circle of thought, with no space.

Q: OK, I’m drawing a circle here to represent my space of thinking: You come along and say, “Let’s eat some cake and ice cream and lose weight.”

 E: And you pick up my thought right in the middle of what I’m saying and argue about it. You make it part of your circle of thought, with no hesitation, and your thinking goes around and around.

 Q: So when you say that I could allow your words to put a break in my circle of thought, then I can actually expand that break, and that would be the space between my thought and your thought.

E: Exactly, and now that works between the two of us, and it also works for you.

 Q: Now that’s difficult.

 E: Yes, because now I’m seeing if I can paint you a picture of what 100 percent is. So 100 percent is the statement which says, “Let’s lose weight.” See, there’s the setup. So automatically you think of starving yourself and having water and whatever the things are . . .

 Q: That I have in mind for a diet.

 E: Right, that starts the whole thing. So you’re already off and running. And then I say, “By eating some ice cream and cake.” automatically you throw that out. “That’s crazy,” you say, and you keep going right around in the same circle.

 Q: I didn’t allow your statement to cut through my circle of thought.

E: Exactly. For example, I cut through your circle and connect it to mine. There’s no difference; they’re both the same. We are moving together in the same circle. That is the conspiracy of ineffectiveness. Now, that I’ve explained all of that to you, I say “Let’s lose some weight and eat some ice cream and cake.” Now what happens in your mind?

 Q: There’s a space there.

 E: There’s a space of nothingness.

 Q: Because what did I not do?

E: You did not already agree and you did not already disagree. You just listened.

 Q: You make a statement about losing weight and eating ice cream and cake, and I neither agree nor disagree. By not thinking about…

E: Just that one simple action.

 Q: I create a space.

 E: Exactly. So then you might say “Alright, well how can we do that? What are you talking about here? I’m liking this, give me some more.” I say “Well you have some on Monday, and then you have some on the following Monday.” Then you think “Oh that’s not such a good idea.”

 Q: What do I have in between?

 E: Nothing—just ice cream and cake. If we’re going to lose weight on ice cream and cake, then what else can we have?

 Q: I don’t know.

 E: So that’s all we’re going to have, is ice cream and cake on Monday. The following Monday…

 Q: So you’re diet is ice cream and cake on Monday, Wednesday and…

 E: No, just Monday, and then the next Monday. Then the whole week off. Now, my question is this: based on what you already know, will you lose weight?

 Q: Well, yeah.
